Post Treatment Tips

Neuromodulaters (Botox & Dysport)

For the best results following your treatment, there are some important dos and don’ts to be mindful of.  This tip is purely optional, but for 1 hour following your treatment, you may try to exercise the treated muscles—by smiling, frowning, raising your eyebrows, or squinting—to help the Botox/Dysport penetrate quicker. Although thought to potentially help, it won’t negatively impact your outcome if you choose not to do this.
For the first 4 hours following treatment, you should avoid lying down flat, wearing ball caps, rubbing or touching the treated areas. This will prevent the Botox/Dysport from migrating into areas we don’t want treated. Any strenuous activity involving  heavy lifting, vigorous cardiovascular exercise, or yoga and pilates should be avoided for 6 hours, and—to minimize bruising— it’s best to steer clear of saunas for at least 1 day.
Lastly, it’s crucial that you don’t get laser treatments, facials or microdermabrasion for a minimum of 2 weeks following treatment. Please note that it can take approximately 4-7 days for the muscles to start relaxing and up to 14 days for full results, so patience is a virtue. If you’re not experiencing your desired result after 10 days, please call us or pop by so that we may assess and address.

Immediately after your treatment expect to experience: mild tenderness, possible bruising, minimal to moderate swelling, and a firm feeling in the treated area for the first few days up to a week. To help minimize bruising, you should inform your Bartender if you use blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or herbal remedies/vitamins (Fish Oil, high dose Vitamin D, Ginko, Ginseng, Garlic, or Vitamin E) before your procedure.  If lips were treated, avoid drinking out of a straw for 1 week following your procedure.

The first 24 hours after treatment, gently apply ice packs to the area(s) to reduce swelling, while carefully avoiding pressure or direct contact between your skin and ice or frozen packs (repeat as needed). Avoid applying lotions, creams or other topical preparations to the treated area for a full day (keep areas clean!).  You are free to apply makeup after 24 hours. To avoid excessive swelling or worsening of potential bruising, do not rub or massage the treated area(s), and be sure to use gentle sweeping motions when cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser.

Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for 24 hours following treatment, as increased blood flow can increase bruising- resume normal activities after that time. If you experience mild tenderness or discomfort, you make take Tylenol (acetaminophen) but avoid aspirin or ibuprofen products, as they may increase the potential to bruise. Drinking alcohol should also be avoided for 12 hours following treatment, as they can worsen swelling and bruising.  Remember to stay very hydrated with water as your fillers will reach their full potential after water absorption.

For 3-4 nights following treatment (forever if possible:), sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. Excessive UV exposure should be avoided until any redness or swelling has fully subsided. Topical or oral Arnica or Bromelain can be taken to avoid bruising immediately after treatment. Depending on your treatment, we recommend waiting a minimum of 4 weeks before receiving an active laser or skincare treatment. Always inform your provider of your dermal filler treatment before undergoing another cosmetic procedure.

At least 1 week prior to treatment, avoid taking: Aspirin (baby aspirin okay), Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, oral steroids, or other NSAIDS (anti-inflammatories). Patients who have been on arthritis/joint medicine long-term (greater than 3 months) may continue taking these medications.

Discontinue Vitamin E supplements or herbal remedies such as Gingko Biloba for at least one week prior to, and throughout, the entire treatment. Patients who are being treated for conditions with Coumadin or Plavix need to notify us prior to treatment as you may not be a candidate for this procedure.

Wear comfortable loose-fitting clothing to your treatment appointment.

Eat within two hours of your appointment.

Take two extra-strength Tylenol 15-30 minutes before your appointment.

Run any errands prior to being treated as you will experience mild to moderate discomfort following your treatment for a few hours.

You may take two extra-strength Tylenol every 4-6 hours as needed after your treatment. Avoid use of the medications previously discussed for at least 1 week after treatment and preferably throughout treatment. Ice may be applied for the first 24 hours.

Avoid taking hot showers or baths, hot tubs or saunas for 24 hours after treatment. After 7 days, heat and massage may be helpful in increasing the efficacy of your treatments. Avoid sun exposure or tanning beds for at least 1 week after treatment.

Avoid strenuous exercise for 2-3 days; low-impact exercise is permitted as tolerated within 1-2 days after treatment. Increase fluid intake, stay well-hydrated (6-8 glasses of water per day), and avoid alcohol consumption for 3-4 days after treatment if possible.

Sleep with your head elevated to avoid additional swelling. After 4-5 days, you may take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as instructed, and Arnica gel may be applied as needed for bruising.
